Confidence and Success

  • Nov. 7th, 2009 at 11:42 AM

Today I’ll talk about confidence and success, and the relationship between these two subjects. After reading this article, you will have a better understanding of why some people just ‘have it all’ and why they have a natural confidence radiated from their persona. You will also know what you need to do, in order to increase your natural confidence and charisma.

If you watch successful people you will usually find that they are very self-confidant. Self-confidence may have come to these people on account of their success, but usually self-confidence is present in people before they become successful. Once they start working toward success, usually self-confidence and success run parallel, each fueling the other.

Success and self-confidence exist in progressive harmony, if you work towards improving your confidence, your growing confidence will support you on each step as you work towards success. And as you get successful, your self-confidence will increase. It is important to develop a harmonious relationship between your confidence levels and the route you are taking to success. If there is no synchronization (over confidence or lack of confidence), it may lead to a fall just as you taste success.

By talking to the opposite sex and trying to break the pattern you have been doing, you will eventually have some success. This is inevitable… remember: some girls, out there, really like you! No matter how you will approach them, how lame your excuse will be – some will like it and think you’re cute!

After this initial positive feedback you’ll start feeling your confidence growing. Use your new power! Continue to do the things you fear and you will find yourself going into the positive loop yourself! You will have more confidence which will attract woman – and increase your success!

Insomnia Causes and treatment

  • Oct. 20th, 2009 at 12:13 PM

Insomnia is such a common condition, affecting millions of Americans, yet many people are not aware of the serious consequences of Insomnia. Commonly referred to as sleeplessness, or lack of sleep, insomnia can lead to severe fatigue, anxiety, depression and lack of concentration. Insomnia is serious, although unlike other diseases it does not kill. But only a sleep deprived person knows how lonely and how terrible this state can be

Many of the causes of  insomnia :

  • Jet lag

  • Changes in shift work

  • Excessive or unpleasant noise

  • Uncomfortable room temperature (too hot or too cold)

  • Stressful situations in life (exam preparation, loss of a loved one, unemployment, divorce, or separation)

  • Presence of an acute medical or surgical illness or hospitalization

  • Withdrawal from drug, alcohol, sedative, or stimulant medications

  • Insomnia related to high altitude (mountains)

Other causes of insomnia

  • Common stimulants associated with poor sleep include caffeine and nicotine. You should consider not only restricting caffeine and nicotine use in the hours immediately before bedtime but also limiting your total daily intake.

  • People often use alcohol to help induce sleep, as a nightcap. However, it is a poor choice. Alcohol is associated with sleep disruption and creates a sense of nonrefreshed sleep in the morning.

  • A disruptive bed partner with loud snoring or periodic leg movements also may impair your ability to get a good night's sleep.

insomnia is caused by another disease or psychological problem. In this case, medical or psychological help may be useful. The most commonly used class of hypnotics prescribed for insomnia are the benzodiazepines. These are minor sedatives and include drugs such as temazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam and midazolam. These medications can be addictive, especially after taking them over long periods of time.Non-benzodiazepine prescription drugs, including the Ambien and Lunesta, are quickly replacing benzodiazepines as a first-line treatment for insomnia, as these drugs show little to no possibility of addiction or dependence. Some antidepressants such as mirtazapine, trazodone and doxepin have a sedative effect, and are prescribed off label to treat insomnia. Low doses of Atypical antipsychotics such as quetiapine (Seroquel) are also prescribed for their sedative effect.

Diwali In US

  • Oct. 12th, 2009 at 3:18 PM

NEWS: Washington: US President Barack Obama would celebrate Diwali "the festival of lights" along with other members of the community at the White House next week."At the East Room ceremony, the President will observe Diwali, or the "Festival of Lights," a holiday celebrated across faiths," the White House announced yesterday evening.

Diwali is one of the biggest Hindu festivals celebrated among many people and communities in the United States. Many schools, community groups, Hindu associations, Indian organizations and corporate businesses get involved in celebrating Diwali. Politicians, including governors and past presidents, previously made public announcements expressing their greetings and well wishes to Hindus on Diwali.

Many Indian stores sell jewelry and traditional outfits, such as chiffon saris, as well as statues of Hindu deities and incent sticks used in prayer around this time of the year. Many women and girls use mehendi, which is a temporary henna decoration, on their palms. It is also common to wear fine jewelry and silk outfits to celebrate this joyous festival.

Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit on Diwali. Some businesses celebrate Diwali with Indian sweets and Chai tea. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have assorted sweets, savories and Diwali herbs. Some communities organize firework displays and states such as Utah have proclaimed Diwali as one of their state festivals.

Diwali is called the Festival of Lights and is celebrated to honor Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil (light over darkness).

The goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, also figures into the celebration. It is believed that she roams the earth on this day and enters the house that is pure, clean, and bright. Diwali celebrations may vary in different communities but its significance and spiritual meaning is generally “the awareness of the inner light.

7 Way To Impress Girl

  • Sep. 30th, 2009 at 11:57 AM

There are various ways to impress girls. If you’re ready  then read on! Let's start with

Number 1- Don't try to impress- Yes here it is the very big secret in front of you! The best way to impress a girl is not to impress her. Now you might be wondering how does this really work. Well when most guys try to impress girls they tend to become more unauthentic and try to show off with almost anything and everything. Girls are not impressed by such tactics and would end up putting you in the "Show off" category. The best way to impress a girl is to be yourself and let things happen automatically.

Number 2-Never hold her hand. This can be interpreted as a sign of weakness (or if she grabs your hand squeeze hers really, really hard until she cries. This will impress her by showing her what a strong man you are.

Number 3 - This is a given. Be thoughtful. Listen to her and do not try and override what she is saying with your opinion. Be thoughtful relative to her sensitivities.

Number 4 - Having a job helps to impress and being able to keep that job may even impress her more. However it is not just about having a job, running your own business will also be impressive. If you find you are in a dead beat job at present the very aspiration to do better will also impress her.

Number 5 -Take her to a party. When you get there she'll have to go to the bathroom (they always do). Leave immediately. Come back right when the party's dying and yell at her the whole way home for ditching you at the party.

Number 6 -Don’t forget to act gentlemanly all the time. And don’t make the mistake of being arrogant about it either.

You can offer to carry her things or help an old woman cross the street. Even if she doesn’t want a guy to do things for her, she will nevertheless appreciate it when you do this for others. If you happen to be riding the bus or the train, offering your seat to a lady or a senior citizen is one of the well-known ways to impress girls.

Number 7 - Last but not least be sincere. Once again do not jump on the BS train. Women are impressed by sincerity.

Guy's if you are serious about getting the girl of your dreams then you need to seriously work on solid techniques to achieve your goal. If you know what a girl is thinking it is far easier to approach her. If You want to learn the tested psychological secrets of the female mind given to you by a woman because after all only a woman truly knows what a woman wants, then select one of the following links... Diabetes Facts and Statistics

  • Sep. 8th, 2009 at 12:59 PM

What is it?

Diabetes is a disease where the body cannot properly produce or use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that turns the foods you eat into energy. If your body cannot turn food into energy, not only will your cells be starved for energy, you will also build up glucose (sugar) in your blood. This will lead you to have "high blood glucose levels." Over years, the high blood glucose level can damage major organs like your heart, eyes, and kidneys.

Statistics:

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 18.2 million people in the United States with Diabetes. That's 6.3% of the population.

Diabetes is found in both men and women over the age of 20. About one-third of Diabetics do not know that they have it. African Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have diabetes than Whites. Latinos are 1.5 times more likely to have diabetes than Whites.

Type 1 is most often found in children, with the peak incidence at puberty. Type 2 is generally found in adults, however an alarmingly growing number of children are now diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. One of the main causes is overweight.

Types:
    • Type 1 Diabetes is caused by a total lack of insulin that, in turn, produces high blood glucose levels. Type 1 is most often is seen in children, but can develop in adults. If you have Type 1, your health care provider might recommend scheduled, nutritious meals, exercise, medication, and frequent blood sugar level tests.

    • Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot properly use insulin. This is the most common type. The treatment may be similar to Type 1.

    • Pre Diabetes or Borderline Diabetes may occur before a Type 2 diagnosis. Blood glucose levels will be higher than normal. Good nutrition and exercise may be recommended by your health care provider as treatment for pre diabetes. Even a slightly high blood sugar level is insidious and could affect major organs over time.

    • Gestational Diabetes occurs in pregnant women that have high blood glucose levels. This type of Diabetes can harm both Mother and baby. If you have Gestational Diabetes, your health care provider may prescribe meal plans, exercise, daily testing and medicine.

Symptoms:

The main symptom of diabetes is the lack of insulin activity or the inability for the body to create insulin.

Other symptoms include:

    • increase in urine production
    • blurry vision
    • irritability
    • extreme hunger
    • excessive weight loss
    • increased fatigue
Causes and Risk Factors:

The exact causes of Diabetes are still unknown. However, heredity, obesity and lack of exercise may play a role. Here are some general risk factors:

    • Your siblings or parents have diabetes.
    • You are more than 20% overweight.
    • You do not exercise.
    • You have had gestational diabetes or you have had a baby over 9 lbs.
    • You have high blood pressure.
    • Your cholesterol level is not normal.
Treatment Options:

According to the American Diabetes Association, people with Diabetes have the same nutritional needs as everyone else. In addition to prescribed medications, well-balanced meals may help you keep your blood glucose level as normal as possible.

Also, just like everyone else, exercise is an important part of staying healthy. Exercising with diabetes does require a few extra safety steps that your health care professional can make you aware of.

Nutritious meals, an exercise routine, along with the help of your doctor may aid you in controlling your Diabetes. Diabetes will never truly go away, but with proper nutrition, exercise and prescribed medications, it can be controlled.

Outlook:

There is no cure for Diabetes, but the treatment options are becoming better than they've ever been. Self-monitoring devices for blood glucose levels and administering insulin are the areas that have seen the most improvement. The following are a list of new treatment options that are currently being researched:

    • Insulin Pump Implants - a permanently implanted pump that will measure blood sugar levels and deliver the exact amount of insulin needed.
    • Insulin Capsule Implant - an insulin capsule that can be implanted to continuously release insulin into the bloodstream.
    • Insulin Inhaler - a rapid-acting insulin that is inhaled into the mouth. Currently in clinical trials.
    • Insulin Pill - Currently, the pill form has only been tested in animals.
    • Continuous Monitoring Device - The GlucoWatch Biographer, a wristwatch-like device, has been approved by the FDA. It is intended as a companion for the fingertip blood test to monitor glucose, in order to ensure accurate results.
    • Islet Cell Transplant - For people with Type 1 Diabetes, helps patients become insulin free for up to 14 months after treatment. Currently in clinical trials.
    • Gene Therapy
    • A Diabetes Vaccine - To prevent or slow the progress of Type 1 Diabetes.

Depression And Your Health

  • Aug. 31st, 2009 at 3:49 PM

Depression is a state of mind which is characterized by a negative sense of inadequacy and a visual lack of activity. It is a mental state in which the effecting person experiences sad feelings of gloom and downturn in mood, which may be relatively transitory and may be due to something complex. The common behaviour includes feelings of sadness, despair, low self-esteem, low self-reproach and discouragement.

The principal types of depression are major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disease (also called manic-depressive disease). Major depression causes a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime.

Dysthymia is a less severe type of depression with long-term chronic symptoms that do not disable, but keep one from functioning well or from feeling good. Many people with dysthymia also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives.

Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) is characterized by cycling mood changes: severe highs (mania) and lows (depression).

No specific cause for depression and anxiety has been identified, it is believed that the emotional and physical symptoms of anxiety and depression stem from a chemical imbalance that exists in the brain.
Depression can be the outcome of many different kinds of experiences, from early childhood to later life.
It is also clear that even mild anxiety symptoms can have a major impact on the course of a depressive illness, and the commingling of any anxiety symptoms with the primary depression is important to consider.

Top 5 ways To cure Depression:

3. Use a Strength - We all have novel strengths, capabilities at which we are principally gifted. Devote one or more of your strengths in some seasoning activity.

4. Contribute Something You Care About - Contribute to a garden, a cordial house plant, a pet, or your car. When we conduce something we feed a loving, caring attention to it that is a form of bestowal. Tending is not a chore, it's a commendation.

5. Apologize - Guilt and lamentation can hang all round us like a maximum burden, bringing on mild depression sans our awareness of the cause. Bid up a candid apology for things you've broken down or said that hurt others. You'll feel the alleviation of your load of penitence even if you aren't able to personally relegate the apology. Bidding it up to the Nature is adequate.

Weight Loss And Diet Advice

  1. De-automate your housework and make your body work harder. Wash dishes, mix batters and open cans by hand, and hang your wash on the line instead of using a dryer.
  2.  Use whipped or softened butter or margarine. You'll spread the flavor around using a lot less than if it were hard and you had to scrape it on.
  3. Learn that it's okay to say an assertive "No, thank you" when other people offer you food.
  4. Hold a conference and explain your weight-loss wish to family, friends or doughnut-bearing co-workers. Ask them to understand if you turn down their dinners or candy.
  5. Go out dancing, miniature golfing, bowling - anything active - if you normally sit around and play bridge or watch television. The most calories you can burn in an hour playing cards is 95, but waltzing can whisk away 195 to 305 for every hour on the floor, and an hour of square dancing can stomp away 330 to 510 calories.
  6. Drink no-calorie sparkling waters when you're out, instead of alcoholic beverages.
  7. Set a realistic goal for yourself. "Take it one day at a time and don't punish yourself for slipping,"says Suzann Johnson, a registered nutritionist with Weight Watchers International. "You'll be more successful if you remember to be your own best friend."
  8. Exercise during television commercials. Those 3-minute spurts will keep you out of the kitchen.
  9. Use good plate psychology. Don't use place settings with intense colors such as violet, lime green, bright yellow or bright blue; they're thought to stimulate the appetite. The same goes for primitive-looking pewter and wooden plates. Instead, appease your appetite with elegant place settings in darker colors. Choose plates with broad decorative borders and a slightly "bowled" design. You can fit less food in them.
  10. Eat only at scheduled times in scheduled places and leave the table as soon as you're finished.
  11. Ask for smaller portions and don't eat everything on your plate (unless you're having steamed vegetables and fish, or an equally good-for-you meal).
  12. Remove food stashed in inappropriate places - get the candy bars out of your desk drawer and remove the nut bowl from the coffee table.
  13. Chew each bite of food at least ten times to really taste it and to make yourself eat more slowly.
  14. Don't skip meals. You'll only overeat later.
  15. Invite your spouse or house mate into the kitchen with you when you're preparing meals and cleaning up to keep you from sampling as you go.

Swine Flu And Prevention

  • Aug. 10th, 2009 at 1:51 PM

History of swine flu:

In 1976, there was an outbreak of swine flu at Fort Dix. This virus is not the same as the 2009 outbreak, but it was similar insofar as it was an influenza A virus that had similarities to the swine flu virus. There was one death at Fort Dix. The government decided to produce a vaccine against this virus, but the vaccine was associated with neurological complications (Guillain-Barré syndrome) and was discontinued. Some individuals speculate that formalin, used to inactivate the virus, may have played a role in the development of this complication in 1976. There is no evidence that anyone who obtained this vaccine would be protected against the 2009 swine flu. One of the reasons it takes a few months to develop a new vaccine is to test the vaccine for safety to avoid the complications seen in the 1976 vaccine. New vaccines against any flu virus type are usually made by growing virus particles in eggs. A serious side effect (allergic reaction such as swelling of the airway) to vaccines can occur in people who are allergic to eggs;these people should not get flu vaccines. Individuals with active infections or diseases of the nervous system are also not recommended to get flu vaccines.

 swine flu

  Step 1: Be Aware

  • The CDC provides up to date reports on any epidemic, including the swine flu outbreak of spring 2009. As of April 27, there had been:
  1. 7 cases in California
  2. 2 cases in Kansas
  3. 28 cases in New York City
  4. 1 case in Ohio
  5. 2 cases in Texas
  • Visit the CDC website or pay attention to local, national and international news reports to ensure you are aware of any recent developments and remain informed about where and how the swine flu is believed to be spreading.

  Step 2: Keep Clean

  • The swine flu is believed to spread mainly from person to person via airborne germs expelled when an infected person coughs or sneezes. To help prevent from being infected:
  1. Wash your hands often with warm water and antibacterial soap
  2. Avoid touching foreign surfaces
  3. Avoid touching your face, especially the areas around your eyes, nose and mouth
  4. Always cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and wash your hands immediately after doing so
  5. If you are unable to wash your hands regularly, carry an alcohol-based hand wash or hand sanitizer with you and use it regularly
  6. Avoid areas or people that may be contaminated
  7. If you need to visit a contaminated area or feel you are at high risk for contracting the disease, consider wearing a face mask

  Step 3: Limit Travel

  • Although the World Health Organization had not recommended any border closures or travel limitations as of April 27, 2009, those who felt ill were advised to delay traveling internationally whenever possible. In addition, people who developed flu-like symptoms after traveling to foreign countries were advised to see a doctor.

  Step 4: Wear Respiratory Mask

If you're really paranoid and don't mind looking odd then consider wearing a respiratory mask. This barrier method does offer some basic protection against infection though not all masks are created equally. Higher quality masks capable of filtering out some respiratory infections are more expensive.

  Step 5: Avoid Public Gathering

If swine flu infections have been medically confirmed in your area consider avoiding large public gatherings. Individuals can be contagious with the swine flu virus for several day before demonstrating any signs or symptoms of infection. Be particularly careful about indoor gatherings where air circulates poorly.

  Step 6: Contact Doctor

If you start feeling ill with cold or flu-like symptoms do not go to work. Stay home and begin the usual home remedies for colds and flu. Contact your health care provider, local health department or hospital emergency room if your symptoms worsen or fail to improve for information about where to go to be screened for possible swine flu infection.

How To Lose Weight?

  • Jul. 30th, 2009 at 5:13 PM

When people ask, “How To Lose Weight?” it is usually because they have already been disappointed by other weight loss methods. To be expected!
It is widely known now that dieting alone wont always solve the problem. and weight loss happens by replacing the wrong foods for the right ones, daily exercise, and extra help from an herbal weight loss supplement.

With the " weight loss Tip" discussed on this page, you are not only assured but also guaranteed to see results quicker than never before!

There's really no need to starve yourself or go and spend hours at the gym anymore. If you are a business man or a busy corporate employee, if you are a house wife or a professional, it just does not matter anymore. These tricks for weight loss are sure to help you lose weight no matter what kind of life you lead, just stick to this techniques and see the difference for yourself.

Push in two fruits or vegetables with every meal you eat. This will fill your stomach and help you cut down on the calories you would take in from the other foods. You would have gone hours without eating since the previous night, hence eating breakfast would not decrease your tendency to overeat later during the day.Eating at odd irregular times would upset your whole diet. It is always advisable to maintain a specific schedule and always stick to it.

Always know your portions: Half a cup of rice is about the size of your fist, one ounce of cheese is as much as a large marble; a three ounce serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards. Divide your plate into parts: Three fourths of it should be filled with vegetables, grains, beans and fruits while the other quarter should be extra-lean meat or low-fat dairy products.

NEVER skip your meals!
Skipping a meal might seem like cutting on calories but thats not the case. You are basically starving yourself which is very wrong. The next meal that you eat will be converted to pure fat. This will eventually cause you to gain weight rather than losing any.

Drink A LOT of water. One glass of water every hour would do wonders to your body. It helps you eat lesser without making you feel hungry. The large amount of water intake also flushes out all the unwanted waste in your body and helps in digestion too. Drink atleast two to three litres of water daily.

Cut 100 calories a day from your diet. Replace your daily bar of chocolate with a banana or an orange. These 100 calories a day sum up to 1 pound a month. Just by giving up that one bar of chocolate, you can lose 1 pound of weight in one month!

Buy pre-cut fruits and vegetables. You're more likely to munch on them as a snack or make a salad from them if they're already cut. You might feel lazy on one particular day and decide to wipe those veggies and fruits out for that one single day. However, if they're already cut, you'll feel like eating them.

Limit your alcohol intake: Limit it to only occasions. Alcohol is not only extremely fattening but also deteriorates your will power. Alcohol is also very harmful for your body in the long run. Try your best to limit your consumption, if not call it to quits.

Fight your temptation: Don't break your whole diet plan just because of one outing with friends or family. Order just steamed veggies or maybe a grilled sandwich or even a soup and salad combo.Try introducing a herbal supplement in your diet to help curb your appetite and give you more energy as an alternative to overeating.

The last and final tip: FOLLOW ALL THE ABOVE TIPS.

Health problem: AIDS

  • Jul. 21st, 2009 at 4:39 PM

The first recorded sample of HIV was discovered in 1959 in a blood specimen obtained at Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) in the Belgian Congo. This was the first known death chalked up by AIDS. The virus is thought to have originally affected chimpanzees. The crossover from animals to humans may have occurred in the 1950s through an accident or a bite.

What Is Aids & HIV
HIV has two major categories: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1, which currently has about 10 subtypes, is most common worldwide and the only form found in the US. HIV-2 is less virulent and though currently confined to West Africa—it`s spreading.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) basically provokes an infection, which destroys the body`s immune system. And AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is the advanced stage of this disease, when the immune system becomes irreparably damaged, engendering multiple infections and cancers. A person is considered HIV positive when s/he tests positive for any of the 26 diseases (Kaposi`s sarcoma, lymphoma, pulmonary tuberculosis, recurrent pneumonia within a 12-month period, wasting syndrome and other indicators) that can easily invade the body during our immune system`s nonfunctionality.

On invading the body, the virus specifically attacks T-cells. A core part of the human defence system, they mobilize other cells to seek and destroy contagious foreign elements besides leading the immune system`s fight against infections. T-cells are targeted because the AIDS virus parasitizes the CD4 molecules on their surface.

With a protective outer shell of proteins and glyco-proteins, the AIDS virus contains genetic information on the inside. Although substantially smaller than the host T-cells—the virus reproduces by sponging off the host`s cellular resources! Our body fights back by producing up to two billion new T-cells to replace the infected ones, stabilizing the T-cell count temporarily. Yet from day one, the T-cells fight a losing battle.

The genetic information of the AIDS virus, which is encoded as RNA (ribonucleic acid), needs to be reverse transcripted—which the intruder accomplishes with the help of the host cell itself! The now legible DNA is thereafter randomly transferred into the nucleus. All this is accomplished barely a dozen hours following the infection. By this time, the aggressor begins to substantially weaken the host cell, which eventually dies, eroding the immune system and making the body vulnerable to diseases.

Although HIV targets T-cells and other cells in the body, it thrives mainly in the lymph nodes—another important part of the immune system. Each lymph node has a netlike structure inside it that acts as a protective filter by trapping virus and infected T-cells. But as healthy T-cells move through contaminated lymph nodes, they are infected by HIV. Particularly during the early stage of the disease, lymph nodes contain more infected cells than the blood.

Since the first cases of AIDS were identified in 1981, more than 25 million people have died from AIDS.

Symptoms
In the early stages, a mild flu and swollen glands are typical. But the symptoms are often unmistakeable when full-blown AIDS develops. Loss of appetite, weight loss, constant fever, prolonged fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, changing bowel patterns, swollen glands, chills coupled with excessive sweating, especially at nights, lesions in the mouth, sore throat, persistent cough, shortness of breath, tumours, skin rashes, headaches, memory lapses, swelling in the joints, pain in various parts of the body, vision problems and a regular feeling of lethargy and ill health make up the litany of symptoms.

With immune systems out of kilter, HIV-positive persons are susceptible to several types of cancer, particularly Kaposi`s sarcoma (KS), an uncommon form that occurs under the skin and in the mucus membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth. Affected persons have lesions that appear as dark-coloured raised blotches. Though the lesions are painless, once KS spreads to the lungs, lymph nodes and digestive tract, the victim experiences difficulty in breathing, gastrointestinal bleeding and painful swelling around the lymph nodes, especially in the legs.

Treatment:

Antiretroviral treatment can prolong the time between HIV infection and the onset of AIDS. Modern combination therapy is highly effective and someone with HIV who is taking treatment could live for the rest of their life without developing AIDS.

An AIDS diagnosis does not necessarily equate to a death sentence. Many people can still benefit from starting antiretroviral therapy even once they have developed an AIDS-defining illness. Better treatment and prevention for opportunistic infections have also helped to improve the quality and length of life for those diagnosed with AIDS.

Treating some opportunistic infections is easier than others. Infections such as herpes zoster and candidiasis of the mouth, throat or vagina, can be managed effectively in most environments. On the other hand, more complex infections such as toxoplasmosis, need advanced medical equipment and infrastructure, which are lacking in many resource-poor areas.

It is also important that treatment is provided for AIDS-related pain, which is experienced by almost all people in the very advanced stages of HIV infection.

A Heart Healthy Diet

Eating a "heart healthy" diet and maintaining or increasing participation in moderate physical activity may help preserve our memory and thinking abilities as we age, according to new research reported today at the Alzheimer's Association 2009 International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD 2009) in Vienna. "We can't do anything about aging or family history, but research continues to show us that there are lifestyle decisions we all can make to keep our brains healthier, and that also may lower our risk of memory decline as we age," said William Thies, PhD, Chief Medical & Scientific Officer at the Alzheimer's Association.

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Eating Pattern May Reduce Age-Related Cognitive Decline

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is often recommended by physicians to people with high blood pressure or pre-hypertension. The DASH diet eating plan has been proven to lower blood pressure in studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. High blood pressure is considered a risk factor for Alzheimer's and dementia.

Heidi Wengreen, RD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Nutrition at Utah State University, and colleagues examined associations between how closely people adhered to the DASH diet and risk of cognitive decline and dementia among older participants in the Cache County Study on Memory, Health and Aging.

In 1995, 3,831 study participants 65 years of age or older completed a survey that included a food frequency questionnaire and cognitive assessment. Cognitive function was checked again during four assessments over 11 years using the Modified Mini-Mental State examination (3MS), which is graded on a 100 point scale. A DASH diet adherence score was created based on consumption levels of nine food-group/nutrient components -- fruit, vegetables, nut/legumes, whole grains, low-fat dairy, sodium, sweets, non-fish meat, and fish. Participants were ranked by DASH score into five groups, or quintiles.

The researchers found that higher DASH scores were associated with higher scores for cognitive functioning at the beginning of the study and over time. Those in the highest quintile scored 1.42 points higher at baseline and 1.81 points higher after 11 years on the 3MS than did those in the lowest quintile of the DASH score (p-values < 0.001).

They also found that four of the nine food-group/nutrient components used to create the DASH score were independently associated with 3MS scores -- vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, nut/legumes. The scientists created a diet adherence score based on just these four components which they then tested for association with changes in cognitive abilities on the 3MS. Those in the highest quintile scored 1.72 points higher at baseline and 3.73 points higher after 11 years than did those in the lowest quintile of the four-component score (p-values < 0.001).

"Our results suggest that including whole grains, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, and nuts in one's diet may offer benefits for cognition in late life," Wengreen said. "However, we need more research before we can confidently say how much of these foods to include in your diet to experience some benefit."
